When Mengistu invited me to visit the Sunday School he runs, I was surprised that the visit was Friday afternoon. Even more surprised to arrive and find there were 450 children – teenagers rather – in a large upstairs room at the church. Apparently there’s a morning session of the same number as well. They come from the local secondary school and meet on Fridays p I think on Sundays too. The teaching was done by a man/boy of about 18. He had finished at the school the previous year and was giving a talk about the differences between the gospels.
I was the next item on the programme and decided I’d try out my Amharic. They lsitended patiently for a few minutes to my efforts. Then Mengistu said ‘they all speak English’. This led to much hilarity – and a great afternoon.
